










Florida stone crabs are of the species Menippe mercenaria. Its original habitat ranges from the coast of the Yucatan peninsula through the Gulf of Mexico into the Atlantic Ocean as far as South Carolina.
Stone crabs require a unique set of ecological conditions during each of
their 3 development stages: larval, juvenile and adult. Females migrate offshore every spring to
begin their spawning season. After molting out of larval stage, juvenile
stone crabs migrate inshore to coastal estuaries. They grow to maturity
in about 2 years.

Early regulations by the State of Florida had major impact on the fishery.
Declawing and returning stone crabs to sea has preserved a steady supply
of claws without depleting resources. This is, and has been, ecology working at its best
